The Miles Low Speed Vehicle has a specially designed battery pack which consists of six sealed, absorbed glass matt, valve regulated, maintenance free lead acid batteries. Unlike conventional lead acid batteries, these heavy duty batteries which weigh 117 lbs each have been manufactured to maximize the energy density required to power the DC electric motor and lessen the potential decrease in range which can be caused by operation in extreme hot and cold temperatures.

Because the Miles ZX40 is an all electric Low Speed Vehicle, it does not utilize a starter. When the ignition switch is turned to the ON position, a contact is closed and a small amount of current (about 1 amp) from the auxiliary battery powers the electric motor through the DC/DC converter. The auxiliary battery of the Miles ZX40 has a rating of 310 CCA (cold cranking amps) which greatly exceeds the power that is required to start the vehicle in cold weather.

Your MILES Automotive Low Speed Vehicle meets or exceeds all of the criteria of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 500, which was established by the DOT to allow the use of a new class of vehicles whose speed would not exceed 25 MPH. When Miles Automotive designed our Low Speed Vehicles, we did so using the criteria of producing the safest vehicles in this class, using reinforced steel instead of fiberglass unlike all of our competitors, as well as manufacturing these vehicles with crash resistant bumpers and side moldings, and many additional standard equipment items which can not found on other LSV's.

Use 6 portable 12V battery chargers for a 72 volt system (OR70, ZX40S), or 4 portable 12V
battery chargers for a 48 volt system (ZX40). Connect one charger to each battery. When
clamping wires to terminals always avoid close contact with connection of terminals nearby. Set up in a way to avoid someone tripping over wires, off to the side of the shop and away from traffic. Set chargers for 2amp and hold mode. Turn on. Leave on for 20 hours minimum or until each battery reaches 12V. Then set for 20 amps and 135 minutes.
